Making Frugal Choices
Avoid Unecessary Convenience Foods
The supposed "convenience" of many foods is often not worth the added expense. Compare their price and convenience to the alternatives. Consider making your own mixes.
Buy in Bulk Quantities
Many stores will give you a case discount. You can also special order a case of a hard to find item or buy food at wholesale prices from local producers or warehouses. Tofu and tempeh can be frozen for longer storage. Freezing and thawing tofu gives it a nice chewy texture.
Look For Store Brands, Generics or Bulk Bins
These often cost less than name brands. If a store doesn't have bulk bins, look for store-packaged items.
Don't Let Food Spoil
This one is obvious, though it's easy to forget how much money is wasted when we let food go bad. Be aware of what's in your refrigerator and how long it's been there.
Shop Around
Look around for the best prices on your staple foods. You can stock up on non-perishables and frozen foods to avoid going to multiple stores every week.
Clip (or Print) Coupons
Not all coupons save you money. Compare the discounted price to that of alternatives. You can find coupons in your Sunday paper and at Coupons.com and MamboSprouts.com or get them directly from food companies. Visit food company websites or call their customer service phone number. Note that not all stores accept coupons printed from your computer because of the potential for fraud.
